A Perfect Christmas Day

Perhaps you feel that midi is too complicated. Thankfully, you don’t have to create midi songs in order to benefit from their use; firms like OkyWeb* sell dedicated midi players, and their HitTrax song files are ready to go. The main advantages of midi are: change key, tempo, instruments, and mute unwanted tracks. Unlike karaoke, there will be no backup vocal harmony tracks, so midi will not sound as much like the original hit. In spite of this, midi tends to sound more like a live band; in that respect, it seems more professional assuming your midi arrangements are good (many free ones are not). But there are other factors to consider: Hardware players such as music workstations, though portable enough, are still heavy and have lots of buttons. The trend, therefore, is to use computer software to adjust a midi file to your liking, then record it as an mp3. With that in mind, what follows is a budget-minded approach:

First, if your computer has no midi connectors, install a new sound card with midi in/out ports. Then ...

(1) install new midi software such as Music Creator [ new because you probably need the retailer’s help installing and using such items] ; (2) since there's lots of them in basements, borrow a family's neglected keyboard - being sure it has the GM logo and audio outputs ( phones / jacks), then connect its midi ports to your sound card / computer; (3) open a midi file in Creator and press Play. If it works, make an offer to buy the keyboard, then buy a used mixer. With audio cable, connect keyboard Outs to mixer Ins, then mixer Outs to sound card Ins. Using Creator, make desired edits in the midi file (key change, etc.), insert an audio track, then follow Creator’s instructions to record the audio. Export the results as an mp3. Repeat the process for all your songs then burn them to CD in concert order. This does not imply that you are free to share files. Observe copyright law. You may share A Perfect Christmas Day in any format.
